If you think of the components under the bonnet as an orchestra, the timing belt is the conductor. If it isn’t functioning properly, the ‘orchestra’ goes out of tune.
Timing Belts and Chains lifespans vary, depending on the vehicle, and most manufacturers have recommended replacement intervals – usually around 60km or five years.
• See your owners’ manual for manufacturer’s recommendations.
• If you know your car’s service history, you can work out when it is next due for replacement.
• Don’t leave it too long. Problems with the Timing Belt can lead to expensive maintenance work – even engine replacement.
